A/W 2023 Mood Board

I am excited with this project since I really enjoy collecting those beautiful editorial pictures. Our task is to finish the boards for following topics:
- 6 themes boards for A/W 2023
- 1 for key shape for outwear
- 1 for key colour
- 1 for the flat for outwear
How I do theme board:
- Use WGSN to identity A/W 2023 key trend
- Denim on denim
- 90s fairy grunge
- Dystopian Futures
- Pretty Feminine
- Elegant Comfort
- Dark Romance
- Collect the editorial pictures from WGSN, Pinterest and Google. I tried to align the colours and the shapes. Basically, I got 10 to 15 pictures for 1 themes.
- Use a UI/UX tool “Figma” to do the layout. Thank god that I learned it in my previous job.
How I do colour board:
- Use WGSN to identity A/W 2023 key colours.
- Collect the editorial pictures from WGSN, Pinterest and Google. I got around 50-60 pictures in the end.
- Put all the pictures in Figma and arrange them in order of colors which took me a long time, during this process, I also removed some images which weren’t suitable for the board aesthetic.
Sarah’s advice:
- Decide the shapes first, so at this stage, we don’t confirm the colours and fabric. One of my work “Denim on denim” is the one only focus on fabric.
- I did a good job for colour research. Yes, I searched a lots and collected many pictures. Also, i included the silver and gold colours as well.
- Having many pictures doesn’t mean they are good; some people can convey a complete story with just 4 pictures.
- We should do more research on key shape, it should cover 20-30 styles, but most of us only have 10-15.
Takeaway:
It’s happy to get the appreciation from Sarah. However, after Sarah’s explanation, I realized that my understanding of a mood board was a bit different. A mood board should be a reference collage of images considered at the early stages when a brand decides on the direction, style, and color scheme for the next season. I had put too much emphasis on color uniformity on my theme board, even though it had a narrative, it was somewhat limiting. In terms of colors, my research was relatively thorough; all that was needed was the layout for consistent dimensions. As for key shapes, I thought it was enough to find styles covered by the key trends. However, in reality, I should include more elements and then bring them to the team for discussion.
Additionally, I was a bit confused when doing key shapes because the same style could have various fabrics. I wasn’t sure which one to choose to be more representative in the images. However, after some clarification, I learned that key shapes are only represented the style not the fabrics.
